*tar* is installed by default

h2. basic tar usage

the most *nix-style way of getting help for @tar@ is @man tar@

for doing some basic storing/unpacking the following sequences should be enough.

to tar

tar -cvzf tarfilename foldername

</code></pre>

to untar

<pre><code class="bash">

tar -xvzf tarfilename

</code></pre>

the example will tar the folder @abc@ to the archive @abc.tar.gz@:

tar -cvzf abc.tar.gz abc

</code></pre>

for doing the same while preserving permissions

to tar

tar -pcvzf tarfilename foldername

</code></pre>

to untar

<pre><code class="bash">

tar -pxvzf tarfilename

</code></pre>

the example will tar the folder @abc@ to the archive @abc.tar.gz@:
